Mr. Capone
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (September, 1993)
Author: Robert Schoenberg
Average review score:

Mr. Schoenberg Does Mr. Capone Right!
Building and expanding upon the solid foundation previously laid by Pasley and Kobler and correcting old errors, and guided by the likes of top-notch Capone experts Mark Levell and Bill Balsamo, Schoenberg has crafted one of the best Capone biographies to date, far superior to Bergreen's ludicrous fluff. The author puts perhaps too much faith in the questionable testimony of "Born Again" hoodlum George Meyer but that is abbreviated and an almost a minor aside in this comprehensive, well-researched bio of America's all-time greatest gangster.

Outstanding
This is THE definitive biography of the world's most famous gangster. The book is exceptionally well-written, able to satisfy anyone from a casual layman to an organized crime expert. Schoenberg walks us through Capone's life, showing us why he did what he did and avoiding getting caught up in the usual myths surrounding him. The author's notes at the end of the book are extremely helpful. Most of all, Schoenberg gets almost all the dates and facts right when dealing with the events surrouning Capone's life. While I personally disagree with his take on the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, he presents this event and others like it in such a precise manner one cannot help but say positive things. Anybody seeking information about Al Capone should look no further than Mr. Capone. A few other books about him have been published in the last ten years, specifically one by Laurence Bergreen, which is a far worse book and yet has received more publicity the Schoenberg's opus. All others should be ignored. Mr. Capone is the best book ever written about Al Capone.

Brilliant!
Robert Schoenberg really did a masterful job. The way the author describes the Capone-era is breathtaking and I was pleased that he also focusses on Capone's rivals and mentor(s). Besides the enormous amount of research he did I was particularly impressed with his writing skills. His fluent and accurate style, the humour he puts into the text is simply fantastic. That's how the book earns its five stars. You read a story, not a series of facts. Schoenberg is very careful not to add to much superfluous information, something many biographers might learn from. I would say it's hard to put down, but I forced myself occasionally...so that I have something to look really forward to the following day.

My Patients With Tales
Published in Paperback by Pause Publishing Company (05 April, 1999)
Authors: Robert W. Pope and Marjorie M. Pope
Average review score:

A Great Book of Tales
My Patient With Tales is a great book, easy to read and veryenjoyable. Even if Dr. Pope was not my vet (he has been for 22 years), I would still recommend this book to everyone I know. I could not put it down until the last tale was told. This is the kind of book that can be enjoyed by everyone whether they have a pet or not.

Heartwarming
Dr. Robert Pope tells sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always touching tales of his life as a Wisconsin veterinarian. He often ends his tales with a quote from Scripture and a lesson he learned or a realization. I enjoyed his wife's simple drawings. Anyone who loves animals or has pets should read this book. Through Dr. Pope's words, you too can learn some of the things that animals can teach us about life.

Wonderful Short Tales
This book is tales about the tails in the life of a vet in WI. The series of short stories are written so that one does picture the scene of the moment. Dr. Pope brings life to each of these moments in the mind of the reader while giving some Wisconsin philosophy to the reader. I would suggest this book as a book for a Father's Day gift, or a gift to yourself. The illustrations by Marjorie Pope, also bring smiles, especially the cow pictures.

My Soul Said to Me: An Unlikely Journey Behind the Walls of Justice
Published in Paperback by Hci (February, 2003)
Author: Robert E. Roberts
Average review score:

Author Robert E. Roberts Gives Me Hope for The Human Race
People like author Robert E. Roberts give me hope for the human race. "My Soul Said to Me" is an outstanding book that deserves widespread readership by all segments of society. I highly recommend it to anyone concerned about breaking the horrific cycle of violence that our current prison system perpetuates. It is well established that our prisons are training camps in degradation and corruption and that conventional solutions to crime and violence have failed on all fronts. Robert's personal account of his journey behind the walls of justice and his relationship with inmates demonstrates a bold step forward toward a more humane and enlightened prison system. Excellent companion reading to this book is "Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic" by James Gilligan, M.D., a prison psychiatrist for 25 years. I hope Oprah invites both these authors on her show and gives these books the exposure they deserve. --Suza Francina, Mayor, City of Ojai, California, author, "The New Yoga for People Over 50" and "Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause."

An Inspiring and Enjoyable True Story
This book is fascinating. I read it in a weekend. It's the story of a man who transforms his life. Bob Roberts was a successful dentist in the New Orleans area who had a personal crisis prompt him to change. He gave up a wealthy lifestyle and ended up founding an organization called Project Return that helps ex-cons make the transition to a legitimate life in society. It seems most ex-cons end up committing further crime and returning to jail. The graduates of his program have a huge success rate at staying out of trouble.

The book gives some interesting insight into the "Drug War." One of its inadvertent results is that you have non-violent drug users arrested and sent to jail where they are so brutalized that when they are released, they sometimes turn violent, usually against someone more helpless than them -- a child victim perhaps.

However, this is not a grim book. It's a pleasure to read. There's a lot that is inspiring and hopeful. Parts are funny and triumphant. I really enjoyed it and endorse it wholeheartedly.

sobering, inspiring, needed
I met Bob Roberts at a conference he hosted a few years ago. This book is as compelling and fierce as I expected. In forsaking comfort to find his own soul, Bob also found a way to help society's outcasts -- prisoners -- discover their own dignity and humanity. These stories are the real thing: messy, poignant, energizing. So few people do this work; so many should know that it can, and is, successfully being done. Help yourself to hope by reading this book.

Mystery of the Fiery Eye
Published in Paperback by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (January, 1984)
Authors: Robert Arthur and Harry Kane
Average review score:

One Puzzler After Another
In yet another of a series of rip-roaring puzzlers from the mind of Robert Arthur, we now see Jupe and the Three Investigators triumph over a secretly coded message and a cast of assorted bad guys to solve yet another case. The puzzle of the coded message sent to August August (yes, that's his name) by his great-uncle proves to be even more perplexing than it at first appears. The boys seemingly solve the mystery several times, only to be rewarded each of those times with yet another clue to the location of that which they seek, namely a brilliant, long-lost, cursed ruby. Racing them to the prize are a mysterious man from India and a gang of rather foolish tough guys running around with fake black mustaches. I really admired how Arthur brought everything together at the end of the book, incorporating several small details I had dismissed as tangential at the beginning of the tale. As usual, you will find a chapter named "Trapped!" in the book, but, as is also quite usual, the boys find a way out of danger and prove that criminals are no match for the brains of Jupiter Jones and the steadfastness of his intrepid companions. This isn't quite as good as some of the earlier books in the series, but it is certainly an enjoyable story; also, it makes you think. Try putting the book down as you approach the final chapters, after all of the clues are known to you, and see if you can solve the mystery along with our heroes.

Turn back the clock.
I started reading the Three Investigators Mysteries back in the late 70's as a boy of ten. I believe that The Mystery of the Fiery Eye was the first and it hooked me in for many adventures to come. Now, as a man in his 30's, I am rediscovering just how wonderful these books really are. It is so refreshing to put aside adult matters for a few hours and return to a simpler time. I can't recommend this series highly enough to young and old alike.

Great reading
I was a fan of these characters growing up. I was always trying to find the next case that the boys would be solving. I am buying these books for my 9 year old son so that he can enjoy them as much as I did. They were even better than the Hardy Boys! (I will probably re-read them to share the fun with my son)

A Great Resource for Any Marriage
We picked this book up after reading about it in Publisher's Weekly and what a gem! This book is a perfect blend of the practical and the spiritual for getting a marriage back on track. Even solid marriages can benefit. Lots of real-life examples and inspiring passages. A must-read for anyone interested in solidifing their matrimonial bonds.

A set of practical relationship tools

Innovative, practical, "user friendly", insightful, informative, and occasionally inspiring, The New Marriage is very highly recommended reading for anyone needing assistance in helping to rebuild or strengthen his or her relationship.

Readers from Florida
My husband and I loved this book! It gave us a whole new way of looking at our marriage and some really constructive advice for further strengthening our relationship. A lot of the personal anecdotes and examples really struck a resonant chord. Also, after reading this, we find we've done a lot more self-exploration to see how we can leave behind the blame and bring the very best in ourselves to our relationship. We recommend this book to ANY couple (including happily married ones!) who are interested in building a stronger relationship.

The New Craft of Intelligence: Personal, Public, & Political--Citizen's Action Handbook for Fighting Terrorism, Genocide, Disease, Toxic Bombs, & Corruption
Published in Hardcover by OSS International Press (08 April, 2002)
Author: Robert David Steele
Average review score:

Work at home as an intelligece analyst
Robert Steele, the maven of open source intel, explains why every citizen needs to start their own collection and analysis program. The first reason is so that she can understand the risk to herself of international crime and terrorism. The second reason is to protect her own liberty from domestic threats, private and public.
Buy this book. Think about what Steele has to say. The truth will set you free.

What to do to understand the revolution
Homeland secutity is based upon individual security brought about by individual understanding. It is not brought about by surrendering individual freedom so that government can make us secure. Steele explains why this is and what to do. Read this and Poole's Phantom Soldier and you'll understand of why most of the world's people hate America.

Author Responds to Inaccurate Comment

The reviewer who attributes my views on the roots of terrorism is surely a well-meaning person, but was much too quick to apply a personal bias on Chomsky to my own work. For the record, I was one of the first CIA Clandestine Service case officers assigned terrorism as a full-time target, hence have something of an operational understanding not available to the general public including Chomsky and the reviewer in question; 2) my educational work includes an undergraduate thesis on multinational corporate operations in the Third World; a first graduate thesis on the causes of revolution; and a second graduate thesis on strategic and tactical information management for national security (what can we and what do we know about the real world in order to make effective policy); 3) my life includes thirty years of residence overseas from which my direct observations on poverty, disease, and other conditions including corruption are applicable.

The comment about needing a filter and Chomsky should therefore be regarded as inaccurate. The book includes a 135 page annotated bibliography and a 25 page guide to web sites about corruption, cyber-advocacy, disease, education, environment, genocide, homeland defense, instability, intelligence, proliferation, slavery and human trafficking, starvation, terrorism, and transnational crime. In my view as the author, the previous review misrepresents the depth and breadth of the book in a grevious manner that requires my respectful response.

New Orleans Cemeteries: Life in the Cities of the Dead
Published in Hardcover by Batture Pr Inc (October, 1997)
Authors: Robert Florence, Mason Florence, and Ann Cahn
Average review score:

A Must Buy!
I was very pleased with this book and read it from cover to cover.Besides having a fascinating text it's loaded with beautiful pictures, including a set of pictures of Anne Rice doing a publicity shoot in one of New Orleans's cemeteries.I really wasn't that familiar with the history of the burial grounds in New Orleans and I learned a LOT from this book. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who's into cemeteries, funeral history, and Anne Rice!

Spectacular pictures
I would never have went to New Orleans without visiting at least one of the famous above ground cemeteries - I was not disappointed! The history behind them is fascinating. They're built above ground, so that when there is any kind of flooding, the bodies don't float away since New Orleans is 700?ft below sea level. What was really neat to me though, is that one tomb, could and would be used for many generations of the same family. I thought it was a comforting thought to know that you wouldn't be burried alone, but in the exact same place as your ancestors. I think New Orleans people celebrate death, not that they're glad someone is gone, but that they're glad they had the chance to live and love them! There is just a kind of magic about the cemeteries, especially St. Louis #1, the oldest cemetery in the area. The photo's in this book capture that magic! Unfortunately, the section on #1 is small. This book includes many of the cemeteries including St. Louis 2 and 3, and Metairie, which is one of the nicest and most [costly] ones. I highly recommend this book for it's information and photography! If you go to see #1, it is in a not-so-good crime area that is improving, but make sure you go with a tour! The tour guides always have some interesting extra info!

An Unexpected Enjoyment
We travel to and through Louisiana quite a bit. Because of this, I tend to pick up books about Louisiana, particularly Louisiana history. I bought this book because I liked the pictures. However, once I began reading this book, I realized that there was much more to the cemeteries than interesting statues. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this book and found it as informative as it was interesting.

This book begins with an introduction about cemeteries in Louisiana and then covers different cemeteries in Louisiana. Generally there is a history of the cemetery, an accounting of some of the more famous people buried in each cemetery and a lot of information.

For someone visiting Louisiana, particularly someone who is considering a tour of the cemeteries, this book is a must.
